About the journal

A slower way to think about the garden.

Absolutely Gardens is a small, independent journal about the British growing year. We write for people who plant more than they buy, who prefer a good hedge to a good lawn, and who believe a garden is a long conversation, not a project.

Each month we share planting notes, gentle how-tos and the odd honest failure — because the compost heap teaches us more than the seed catalogue ever will.

Dahlia Bulbs

The main component of these extraordinary flowering plants consists of tuberous structures named Dahlia bulbs which sustain and enable colorful garden displays throughout summer and fall. Learning about dahlia tubers helps growers achieve superior plant cultivation results.
1. Plant your dahlia tubers during early spring after all frosty conditions become history.
2. The best location exists in full sunlight with moist but well-draining soil.
3. The plant needs 4-6 inches of soil depth with its tubers arranged flat across the soil.
4. Plant tubers with spaces of 2-3 feet between each plant except mono-dimension varieties.
5. Support stakes should be installed when planting the seeds.

Apply water at deep levels but skip overexcessive watering techniques. After the first autumn frost growers should extract the tubers out of the ground. Keep tubers in vermiculite/peat combination with a slight layer of moisture. Storage of tubers requires placement in a dark environment and that maintains a temperature range between 40-50 Fahrenheit. Regular examinations should be performed each month to detect rotting or shriveling of the plants.
Dahlia types include:
– Decorative: Full, broad petals
– Cactus: Pointed, rolled petals
– Pompon: Small, perfectly round blooms
– Single: Simple, daisy-like flowers
– Ball: Perfectly round, larger than pompons
Appropriate care methods for dahlia tubers leads to their annual blossom and creates an increasingly beautiful garden display through their natural multiplication process.
